Police have cordoned off a number of Roads in Portsmouth as armed Police swooped on a property in New Road today (16th April).
The incident happened just after lunchtime and police detained a man within the property.
Speculation on social media was that the raid was related to the recent hammer attack in Shearer Road but police have confirmed that there is no link.
Neighbours in the area have been left in shock as they watched the drama unfold.
Jack Fitzjohn who was at the property next door, said, “I was just leaving the property this morning when I saw a woman in distress and crying. I spoke to her and she explained that she had been thrown out of the property by the man. I went to walk back to my car but got a call from my girlfriend asking me to come back. As soon as I walked around the corner, there were armed police with dogs and guns. The police were all around the outside of the entrance and all on the stairs. They explained that I could not go back into the property.”
Mr Fitzjohn, 19, added, “It was pretty scary but the police looked like they had it all under control.”
Ms Dalek added, “Police were here the other day saying that they were looking for him. I think it’s all to do with drugs and a gun he has in the property. We try to keep ourselves to ourselves.”
No injuries were reported during the incident. All roads are now open and traffic queues have subsided.
Police are currently at the block searching two properties.
A spokesman for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police said, “Kingston Road and New Road was closed off by police during an Incident at a North End residential address this lunchtime. One man has been detained by Police and taken to Portsmouth Central Police Station where he remains in custody.”
