Hampshire Fire Urban search and Rescue Fire Crews have been called in to check a decommissioned fuel bunkers in the Portsmouth today. The team was mobilised following the discovery and theft of piping and metals gates from with the underground fuel stores.
Search specialists spent the day searching the five and half mile long pipeline that was installed in the early 1940s and linked the Oil Fuel Reservoir on Portsdown with the Admiralty Oil Fuel Depot at Forton in Gosport. A specialist Search dog was also called in to support the crew.
Concerns were raised after mindless thieves had broken into the tunnels and stolen a large amount of metal and piping from the restricted area. Search and rescue specialists wearing orange overalls and wearing MSA SavOx Self-Rescuer kits. The crew of five spent the day at the site checking that one was stuck or still in the tunnels before the site was re-secured.
The USAR specialists response teams provide and carry an enhanced range of equipment, skills and knowledge for dealing with a wide range of unusual and complex incident No one is believed to have been found in the tunnels and enquiries into the theft are continuing.
