Southampton Law Student Charged with manslaughter over Island Man Death


A Southampton Law Student 21-year-old Ryan Cooper has been charged with manslaughter following the death of 49-year-old Gary ‘Jeff’ Stacey after a night out on the town on Valentine’s Day this year.

Ryan Cooper of Alma Road, Southampton was initially arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm after 49-year-old Gary Stacey – known as Jeff – was found lying in the middle of St James’ Street by a bus driver during the early hours of Sunday 14th February.

Mr Stacey’s family took the decision to switch of his life support machine after he was flown to Southampton General Hospital with serious head injuries.

Following the death of Jeff Stacey, Ryan Cooper – originally from Newport – was arrested on suspicion of murder and released without charge in relation to suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He has now been charged with manslaughter and will appear before the Isle of Wight Combined Court on Friday 1st July.
