Two Hurt After Major Incident at Portsmouth Tower Block

Two people have been rushed to hospital by South Central Ambulance after a major blaze ripped through a flat in a tower block in Somerstown, Portsmouth.


Fire bosses described the fire in Quinton Close as a ferocious blaze but praised crews for their swift response in tackling it.


Concerned neighbours raised the alarm after smoke filled the corridors on the 12th and 13th floors. One resident described how he was led through acrid smoke to escape from the incident.

A number of residents were evacuated and taken to the nearby hub community centre and are being looked after by Portsmouth City Council.

A fleet of ambulances and a Hazardous Area Response Team were also sent to the incident.

Unaffected residents within the block awoke to a sea of emergency services in the street.

Fire crews used four hose reels and positive pressure ventilation (PPV) in an attempt to keep the temperature down.

A source has revealed that a resident one   firefighter has been rushed to hospital four other fighter fighters  were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion.
