A road in Portsmouth remains sealed off this evening after a car ploughed into railings on Lake Road in Fratton. A number of witnesses have described it as a scene out the Fast and the Furious unfolding in front of them as boy racers were being pursued by the police as they raced through the busy streets.
One of the racers in a Volkswagen Golf took the junction too quickly as the driver lost control of the vehicle which smashing through the railings and coming to a stop facing towards oncoming traffic. Two passengers were arrested whilst still in the crashed car and both required medical attention.
It is believed that one of the passengers has been taken to QA Hospital with facial injuries. The driver has been arrested and is now being taken away for questioning after the chase
Police are asking motorists to avoid the area while they investigate the scene and the clean up operation is taking place. Paramedics from South Central Ambulance Services have treated two people at the scene.
Fratton resident Katie Jennison-White had her evening disturbed when police sirens alerted her to the drama unfolding outside her own front door. A police chase and car smash at the junction of Fratton Road and Lake Road is not something you see on your doorstep every day.
Katie said, "I was sat in my living room when we heard a crash, shortly followed by police sirens. This was caused by a police chase.
"After all the damage a man [the driver], who was wearing a grey hoodie with light-coloured shorts ran away."
Eyewitnesses said that the silver Golf hatchback was, "being chased by the police, took the junction too quickly and careered over the road. They smashed through the metal railings and their air bag was deployed."
Another witness describes the car as travelling down Lake Road "at over 50mph being chased by a police car."
Two passengers were arrested whilst still in the car, both needing medical attention. It is thought one has been taken to QA Hospital after receiving facial injuries when an airbag was deployed. The driver was captured and arrested shortly afterwards after attempting to flee the scene.
The three occupants of the vehicle are all described as white males in their early 30s. One is believed to have a certain criminal notoriety in the Portsmouth area.
