Police have closed the M3 southbound between Basingstoke south and Winchester, following a fatal collision which happened just after 6.30am this morning.
Both lanes of the southbound carriageway are blocked. It is believed a vehicle collided with a tree and the driver was thrown from his vehicle then struck by another vehicle.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, along with collision scene investigators.
The man was caught in a collision involving four vehicles on the M3 southbound carriageway between Winchester Services and Junction Eight for Andover.
Details of the incident are unclear, but a spokesman from the ambulance service said that the man had “walked onto the carriageway” after a vehicle he was travelling in had stopped by the roadside.
Police have launched an investigation, but have yet to confirm the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said crews had been called at 6.32am following reports of a pedestrian having been struck by a vehicle on the carriageway.
He said a car – containing the man and a woman – is believed to had gone off of the road.
He added: “The man then got out of the car and walked onto the carriageway. He was then struck.”
Drivers are advised that the southbound carriageway of the M3 is unlikely to reopen before midday at the earliest.
Southbound traffic is advised to use the A303,and the A34.
