Jarvis Road Stand off ended with Man being arrested Again by Police

A man has been arrested for a second time after being over powered by Police dressed in riot gear from a property in Portsmouth.

Police shouted ordered to the man to put down a knife before storming the property. It is also understood that the had also attempted to set fire to the property.

The current situation today started just after 11am this morning with police becoming increasingly concerned for the welfare of the occupant of the property.
The Portsmouth Road was sealed off by a Police cordon this afternoon, following a second public order incident in three months.

Riot police stand guard outside a premises on Widley Road – which they have now taken control of – that was also the scene of a public order incident on 30th October last year.

Ben McCreadie, 26, of New Road had taken to the roof of the four-bedroom terraced house in Widley Road last year, which launched a police operation and five-hour stand-off.

The current ongoing situation today started just after 11am this morning with police becoming increasingly concerned for the welfare of the occupant of the property.

Missiles, including a glass bottle and a burning towel, were launched at police from an upstairs window and a man was seen in possession of both a baseball bat and a knife. The man was arrested just after 2pm.

Following the incident in October, McCreadie pleaded guilty to eight counts of criminal damage and an assault. Members of his family spoke about his ongoing mental health issues and their concerns about the lack of help and support people with mental health problems received in the city.

It appears that the austerity cuts that have slashed funding for mental health agencies is yet again causing huge expense for the emergency services.

Although specialist trained negotiators are on scene,
police gained entry to the property with force just after 2pm, backed by a dozen officers, some in full riot gear.

A spokeswoman for Hampshire Police said, “Police were called at 11.19am to reports of concern for the welfare of a man at an address in Widley Road, Portsmouth.

“Officers are currently at the scene and a cordon is in place to allow officers to deal with the incident safely.”

Police could not confirm at this time if there were any other occupants in the sealed-off address.
