The remains were found by ground workers, preparing a building site on a patch of undergrowth, beside the supermarket petrol station forecourt in North Harbour around 11am Wednesday.

Police confirmed the discovery at the Clement Attlee Way store and put a cordon in place whist forensics experts continued a detailed examination of the area.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokeswoman said “We were called to Clement Attlee Way at Cosham shortly after 11am following the discovery of what appears to be human remains.

“Officers are currently at the scene and a cordon has been put in place to protect the area.”

The cordon extends past the site of a planned McDonalds to the exit of the petrol station, which remains open, with customers being redirected back to the entrance once having refuelled.

It is understood that the remains may have lain undiscovered on the waste ground for up to five years.
