The collision happened close to the on slip from junction two. The collision is understood to involves Two four by four and third vehicle. One of the vehicle has left the road. A number of those involved have been taken to hospital by ambulance with what are thought to be serious injuries.

Both the north and Southbound carriageway were closed after paramedics called upon the support of the Surrey and Kent air ambulance.

Traffic trapped in the closure has been turned around with the assistants of officers from Highways England. A spokesman for the agency said : The M3 in Surrey is closed westbound between J1 and J2 due to a traffic collision. Surrey Police are on scene along with the Ambulance Service and Highways England Traffic Officers.

Traffic should leave the M3 westbound at J1 (Sunbury Cross), taking the 4th exit to join the A308, then continuing for approx. 4 miles to the junction with the A30 (Crooked Billet Interchange), then taking the second exit to join the A30 (Staines Bypass). Continue on the A30 to the junction with the M25 J13, however due to a pre-planned roadworks closure of the M3 westbound between J2 and J3, traffic will then need to continue on the A30 to the junction for the A322 (Bagshot). From here, join the A322 (Bracknell Road), continuing to the M3 J3 interchange, taking the 3rd exit to rejoin the M3 westbound.

Police have warned drivers that the road is unlikely to open before 7am at the earliest due to collision investigation work and recovery and clean up of the scene
