The M1 remains closed northbound at Junction 15 following a horror smash involving two Heavy goods vehicles overnight. Motorists using M1 where trapped for over five hours following the collision. It is understood that the lorries belong or were under contract to UPS and DHL. Both lorry articulated lorries a were on route to off load parcels at the national exchange hubs in the Midlands.
The Serious Collision between the two HGV happened just before the exit slip of Junction 15A. Emergency services were called to the scene just after midnight on Tuesday evening.
Fire Crews from Northamptonshire fire and rescue services battle for over four hours to the free the trapped driver from the crumpled cab after the lorry ploughed into the rear of trailer of a second trailer that was filtering across due to the scheduled road closure. Fire Crews requested the assistance of a Crane and an aerial ladder platform to try to gain access into the crumpled vehicle to free the driver. Crews also used specialist hydraulic cutting and spreading equipment but attempted were fruitless.
Highways England road traffic officers are currently on scene, along with Northamptonshire Police and fire services and East Midlands Ambulance Service, Highways England reports.
Traffic is now being diverted from J15A via the ‘Hollow Diamond’ diversion symbol.
From J15A, take the A5123 and continue to Danes Camp Way roundabout.
Then, take the second exit to join the A5076 Upton Way, continuing to the A5076/A4500 Sixfields roundabout, taking the first exit onto the A4500 Weedon Road.
Continue on the A4500 to the M1 J16, then rejoin the M1 northbound.
The closure is expected to remain in place for some time – it has been advised to that motorists should allow extra time for their journeys this morning.
A major clear up and recovery is currently taking place. and all lane remain closed, Traffic reported to be back up to Milton Keynes. Highways England is advising that the 20 miles in that section of the M1 is currently taking 2 hours. A further collision involving multi vehicles has caused delays at Toddington on the M1 Northbound.
