This Essex Police officer visited a woman at her home, following a silent 999 call, where she disclosed she had been assaulted by her husband. He allowed the suspect an opportunity to get dressed, but the man was clearly unhappy at the officer keeping a watch over him.
Once dressed, he launched himself at PC Fradgley. He punched the officer and used his height and build to pin the officer down. He tried to strangle PC Fradgley and thrust a thumb into his eye.
This lethal technique is taught to the military for self defence, and PC Fradgley said: “It is something you would only do if you thought you were going to die. I thought: ‘is he trying to kill me?’ It was pretty scary stuff.”
The officer eventually struggled free and, with help from a colleague, was able to cuff the suspect.
The man received a suspended sentence after pleading guilty.
PC Fradgley said: “Thankfully my eye was okay but I had to take time off work to recover. Some people think they can be as abusive as they like to police officers and there are no real consequences from the courts.
