The driver of high-speed crash in the West Wight that happened on Tuesday evening has been airlifted to Southampton Hospital in the early hours of the morning for a life-saving operation we can reveal. The driver who was extricated using specialist cutting equipment was transferred by helicopter in the early hours of Wednesday morning from St Mary’s Hospital in Newport on the Isle of Wight. Fire crews from Three stations have first reported carried out a door removal on the white souped-up Ford Focus ST after the driver lost control and the vehicle ploughed into a grass gutter.

Crews worked using spreading and cutters and removed the man in under 20 minutes from the mangled wreckage. The local driver in his 20’s who is from the Island has been airlifted to the special trauma unit in Southampton by Coastguard helicopter just after 3am this morning. The rescue helicopter Rescue 175 from Lee on the Solent landed at Helicopter landing site in Lordshill to be met by a Coastguard search and Rescue team from Hillhead who assisted in the medical transfer. The driver then made the short journey to the general by land ambulance in Coxford Southampton
