The Blackwall Tunnel will be closed overnight this Friday to accommodate roadworks related to the ongoing Silvertown Tunnel Project.
The closure will affect southbound traffic only and will be in place from 11pm on Friday, October 18, until 8am on Saturday, October 19. The closure will allow for work on a new road layout on the A102.
Impact on Traffic
- Northbound traffic will still be able to use the tunnel, but diversions may be in place on the approach. At times, northbound traffic may be diverted through the southbound tunnel.
- HGVs and large vehicles are advised to avoid central London routes due to size and weight restrictions on some river crossings.
About the Silvertown Tunnel Project
The Silvertown Tunnel is a 1.4km road tunnel with a dedicated bus lane, aimed at reducing congestion and improving connectivity. It was first proposed in 2012 and received approval from the Secretary of State for Transport in 2018.
Travel Advice
Drivers are encouraged to:
- Plan ahead and check their routes before travelling.
- Allow extra time for journeys due to the potential delays.
The congestion charge will still apply during the closure.
Bus Route Update
Bus route 108 will not be affected by the overnight southbound closure, as buses will be escorted through the tunnel throughout the night.
Motorists are urged to stay updated on the latest traffic information to minimize disruptions.
