New Character Joins Call the Midwife as Series 14 Unfolds
The BBC has confirmed the arrival of a new character in Call the Midwife, adding another layer of drama and intrigue to the beloved series, now in its 14th season.
The latest episode delivered its usual blend of heartfelt moments and high-stakes drama, featuring a gas explosion, a baby born with spina bifida, and Nurse Joyce Hyland (Renee Bailey) grappling with a case that echoed her own childhood. Meanwhile, Nurse Trixie Aylward (Helen George) took on the challenge of securing crucial financial aid for Nonnatus House.
However, it was the episode’s closing moments that thrilled viewers, as a new midwife was introduced to the Poplar community.
Meet Sister Catherine Cantwell
The BBC revealed that Sister Catherine Cantwell, played by Molly Vevers, is the newest addition to Nonnatus House. Vevers, known for her role as Heather Shaw in Prime Video’s The Rig, expressed her excitement about joining the show.
“In my first episode, I was filming a lot with the lovely Linda Bassett,” Vevers shared. “She was so kind, welcoming, and helpful. Playing a nun, I also had a lot of scenes with Jenny [Agutter] and Judy [Parfitt]. It was lovely to work with them and become one of the sisters at Nonnatus.
Sister Catherine is set to debut in episode four as she begins her midwifery qualification at Nonnatus House. The character will grapple with personal challenges and her spiritual journey, as hinted by the BBC.
What to Expect from Sister Catherine
The network teased: “Sister Catherine keeps her distress from most of her housemates, though Sister Julienne is aware of the situation. But the closer Catherine gets to taking her First Vows, the more afraid she becomes. Is she doing the right thing? Can a life lived in the service of God and strangers ever justify the pain she has caused to those who have loved her all her life?”

Fans have expressed excitement about the new storyline, eager to see how Sister Catherine’s journey unfolds and how she integrates into the close-knit Nonnatus House team.
