Tributes Pour in for the Iconic Drummer
February 18, 2025 – Legendary drummer Rick Buckler, best known for his role in The Jam, has passed away at the age of 69, his bandmates confirmed in an emotional statement.
Buckler, who played a crucial role in shaping the band’s distinctive sound, died on February 17 following a brief illness.
Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton Pay Tribute
His former bandmates, Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton, paid heartfelt tributes to their longtime friend and collaborator.
Weller reflected on their early days, writing:
“I’m shocked and saddened by Rick’s passing. I’m thinking back to us all rehearsing in my bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking. To all the pubs and clubs we played at as kids, to eventually making a record.”
“What a journey! We went far beyond our dreams, and what we made stands the test of time. My deepest sympathy to all family and friends – P.W x.”
Foxton also shared his sorrow:
“I was shocked and devastated to hear the very sad news today. Rick was a good guy and a great drummer whose innovative drum patterns helped shape our songs.”
“I’m glad we had the chance to work together as much as we did. My thoughts are with Leslie and his family at this very difficult time.”
Health Issues and Tour Cancellation
Buckler’s death comes shortly after he was forced to cancel his spoken word tour due to ongoing health issues.
A statement released earlier this month announced that he had been advised to rest and recover, delaying his tour plans.
His team wrote:
“Rick was really excited to bring his updated ‘In Conversation’ show to life, but presently, he has been advised to rest, repair, and build his physical strength.”
The Jam’s Legacy
Buckler, along with Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton, formed The Jam while at Sheerwater Secondary School in the 1970s. The band rose to fame with hits like “Going Underground,” “The Eton Rifles,” and “Town Called Malice.”
However, The Jam split in 1982, a decision led by Weller. Reflecting on the split in a later interview, Buckler admitted:
“There was no great scheme. The reason that Paul gave us for leaving the band was rubbish, basically.”
Following The Jam’s breakup, Buckler formed Time UK and later transitioned into production, operating a studio in Islington.
Tributes from Fans and Musicians
Fans and fellow musicians have taken to social media to express their sorrow.
One fan wrote:
“RIP Rick Buckler. Thanks for all the good times and great memories.”
Another added:
“So sad to hear the news of Rick Buckler of The Jam passing. First band I ever saw live and still the best I’ve ever seen. RIP Rick.”
Buckler’s legacy as a pioneering drummer and a key figure in British music will live on, as The Jam’s music continues to inspire generations of fans.
