A major investigation is underway after a fire ripped through the derelict Welsh Tavern, a 198-year-old pub located on London Road in Stone, just outside Dartford.

The blaze began at approximately 6:48pm on Wednesday, 11 June, sending thick smoke billowing into the air and prompting a large-scale response from Kent Fire and Rescue Service and Kent Police.

Building Gutted, Roof Collapsed

Fire crews battled the flames for several hours, eventually bringing the situation under control by 10:30pm. By Thursday morning, the building stood severely damaged—its roof collapsed, windows blown out, and walls blackened by smoke and fire.

Emergency services have taped off the site, and the area remains under watch.

Police Treating Fire as Suspicious

Kent Police have confirmed that the fire is being treated as suspicious, and officers have launched a formal investigation.

“Kent Police was called at 6.48pm on Wednesday 11 June to a fire at a derelict building in London Road, Stone,” a spokesperson said.
“The cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious and an investigation is underway.”

No injuries have been reported.

Road Closures and Disruption

London Road was closed between Hillhouse Road and Cotton Lane for several hours while emergency services dealt with the incident. The road has since been reopened.

History of the Welsh Tavern

  • The Welsh Tavern dates back to 1827 and served the Stone community for nearly two centuries.

  • The pub was closed in 2022, and plans were later submitted to demolish the site and build flats.

  • However, the redevelopment application was withdrawn, leaving the building derelict.

Its destruction is likely to reignite debate over heritage preservation and redevelopment in the Dartford area.
