A major emergency rescue operation is underway at Beachy Head near Eastbourne, after a vehicle reportedly drove off the cliff edge this afternoon.

Emergency services were called at approximately 4:30pm following reports that a car had toppled over the cliffside and landed near the shoreline below. The driver, who is believed to have attempted to take their own life, has survived the fall but is trapped in the wreckage—partially submerged in water.

Multi-Agency Rescue Effort

The incident has prompted a full-scale response involving Eastbourne RNLI Lifeboat, HM Coastguard teams, fire crews, and specialist cutting equipment. The operation is focused on freeing the driver, who remains entrapped in the vehicle below the cliffs.

Eastbourne RNLI confirmed their crew was launched on an urgent mercy mission, while fire crews are on-site coordinating with technical rescue teams from the cliff top and below.

Public Asked to Avoid Area

Beachy Head is one of the UK’s most iconic coastal beauty spots but is also known as a location associated with serious incidents. Authorities have cordoned off the area, and the public is strongly advised to avoid the cliffs and nearby coastal paths while the rescue continues.

A Coastguard spokesperson said:
“This is an ongoing and sensitive rescue operation involving a person in a critical situation. We are doing everything we can to safely recover the individual.”

Awaiting Further Updates

As of 7:45pm, the driver remains trapped and emergency responders continue efforts to stabilise the vehicle and access the casualty. No further information on the person’s identity or condition has been released.
