Wiltshire Police are urgently appealing for witnesses after a police officer was seriously injured during an incident in Swindon on the night of January 13, 2024. The officer is believed to have been struck by an electric bike, leading to a subsequent arrest.
A 17-year-old male has been taken into custody on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with the incident. The injured officer is currently receiving treatment in a hospital, with his family at his side. The police force is also providing welfare support to the injured officer, his family, and his colleagues.
The incident unfolded at approximately 11:20 pm on the night of January 13, at the junction of Faringdon Road with Westcott Place in Swindon. In response to the incident, there will be an increased police presence in the area as law enforcement continues its investigation.
Superintendent Steve Cox expressed deep concern about the incident and extended thoughts to the injured Wiltshire Police Officer and his family during this difficult time. He stated, “This is a highly concerning incident, and our thoughts are very much with the Wiltshire Police Officer who was seriously injured in the course of his duty, and his family at this very distressing time. We have a suspect in custody who was detained nearby, shortly after the incident. An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of what took place.
Superintendent Cox emphasized the importance of obtaining information from witnesses and individuals who may have dash-cam footage of the incident. “We are aware that this was witnessed by a number of members of the public who were in the area at the time, some of whom came to the officer’s aid. It is absolutely vital that we hear from anyone who saw what took place or who may have dash-cam footage that they can share.”
