On Saturday, May 21, emergency services were called to a home on Rotherham Road in Monk Bretton, where Julie Youel, 53, was discovered with severe injuries.
Julie was pronounced dead at the scene, despite the best efforts of responding officers and paramedics.
Darren Youel, 54, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and arrested on suspicion of murder.
“This has been an incredibly tragic and upsetting case for Julie’s loved ones,” said Detective Chief Inspector Jade Brice, the senior investigating officer for the murder investigation.
Youel dialled 999 and requested an ambulance, claiming he had stabbed Julie and then himself. When our officers arrived, he was bleeding from multiple stab wounds, which he admitted were self-inflicted. Because of Youel’s actions that evening, a family has lost their mother and now their father, as he begins a lengthy prison sentence.
“At Julie’s request, I would once again request that their privacy be respected as they grieve their loss and come to terms with the conclusion of our investigation and the judicial process.”
Youel, formerly of Rotherham Road in Barnsley, pleaded guilty to murder at an earlier hearing and was sentenced to life in prison today at Sheffield Crown Court, with a minimum term of 12 and a half years (Friday 29 July).
