A burglar who attacked a disabled man with a golf club in his Blackpool home before stealing his wallet was sentenced to 11 years in prison

At 7.46 p.m. on March 23rd, police were called to an upstairs property on Corporation Street due to reports of a man entering through an open upstairs window.

He was challenged by the occupants once inside the property and left. He returned minutes later, threatening the victim and his wife and demanding money. In an attempt to defend himself, the man swung the golf club twice at the victim’s head, injuring his hand. He then took the victim’s wallet from his wheelchair.

On the same night, we were called to a property on Sherwood Road at 1am after reports of two men entering the building. Officers recognised Shaun Wrigley from the CCTV images from the first incident and arrested him. Officers discovered a knuckle duster in Wrigley’s pocket while searching him.

Wrigley, 37, of Bridge Street, Liverpool, was sentenced to 11 years in prison yesterday (Monday, June 20) at Preston Crown Court for assault with intent to commit robbery, burglary, actual bodily harm, and theft.

“This was a particularly nasty crime, where a vulnerable victim was left with hand injuries,” said Det Sgt Stuart Reid of the Blackpool Targeted Crime Team. In the face of such aggression in their own home, the victims demonstrated exceptional fortitude. The officers who responded to this incident did their best to help the victims by quickly locating and arresting Wrigley. Wrigley has been removed from our streets thanks to their professional response and quick actions. As a result, our community is unquestionably a little bit safer.”
