An unexpected call for help on the M25 resulted in Kent Police officers assisting with the birth of a baby on the side of the road.
Officers discovered a stranded vehicle on the Darenth Interchange slip road at 2.43pm on Monday, July 25, 2022.
PC Aimee Smith and PC Nathan Southern discovered a woman in labour in the back of a car on the busy road.
They requested the assistance of Sergeant Brett Barham, a trained police medic.
‘When I arrived, the baby girl had just been born into the hands of the officers, but due to the extreme traffic congestion in the area, we felt that an ambulance would not be able to get to the scene quickly enough to assist mum and baby,’ said PS Barham of the Swale Local Policing Team.
‘As a result, we turned on the lights and drove her and her partner to the nearest hospital, leaving the family in the care of professionals, where I understand they are doing well.’
‘I am grateful that we were nearby and able to assist in this case.’ I wish the family and their new baby all the best.’
‘I am glad that baby and family are doing well,’ said PC Southern of the Rural Task Force. This is one of those shifts that I will remember for the rest of my career.’
