Shortly after 12.10am on Sunday, 27 February, officers on patrol came across a 38-year-old man with head injuries in London Road, close to West Croydon Railway Station.
They provided first aid until the arrival of London Ambulance Service. The man was taken to hospital where he remains in a life-threatening condition. His next of kin have been informed.
The man is believed to have been assaulted by a group of around seven people who left the scene towards the Centrale Shopping Centre before police arrived.
Officers are carrying out urgent enquiries to trace them. They have already spoken to several witnesses and are reviewing CCTV from the area.
