A replica spitfire that was en route to a show on the Isle of Wight caused chaos today when the trailer carrying it overturned on the A3.
The incident happened on the southbound carriageway near Burnt Common, between the B2215 London Road and the Clay Lane junction near Burpham.
Police have described the traffic as ‘absolutely chaotic’ as one lane was blocked and queues were back to junction 10 of the M25 (Wisley).
Terry Arlow built the plane over 28 years out of various pieces of old spitfires. He was on his way to a 1940s show on the Isle of Wight when the trailer sheared off and crashed into the embankment.

A spokesman from Surrey Police, said: “Surrey Police is currently in attendance on the southbound carriageway of the A3 near Wisley following reports of a collision involving a vehicle trailer.
“At around 11.15am today (Friday, 1 July) a vehicle with a trailer attached carrying a light aircraft was travelling on the motorway when the trailer became detached and left the road before colliding with a tree.

“There were no reports of any injuries but the road remained partially closed whilst the trailer and aircraft are recovered from the scene.”
