The University of Portsmouth has appointed a new Pro Vice-Chancellor Global Engagement.

Chris Chang is currently Pro Vice-Chancellor Corporate Marketing, International and Development Services at Anglia Ruskin University. He has over 20 years’ experience in the higher education sector and a background as a lawyer.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Galbraith said: “With students from over 130 countries, we already benefit from a strong international culture. We now want to extend our global partnerships and reach to make our high-quality brand of education even more accessible worldwide.

“Chris has a wealth of experience delivering international activity in the higher education sector, which makes him an excellent addition to the senior management team.

“This is an exciting stage in the University’s development, having just defined a new vision that maps out our ambitions as a leading UK university. Key to that vision is developing our global reputation and building a truly international culture of education, and I am confident that the combination of Chris’s experience and charisma will help us achieve our international ambitions at home and overseas.”

Chris qualified as a barrister in 1986 and began his career working as an advocate and solicitor at the High Court of Malaya, advising large corporate clients. He moved across to the HE sector in 1990, working for the University of London at Stamford College, Malaysia.

He then moved to Manchester Metropolitan University as Head of International before being appointed Director of International at Brunel University in 2007. Chris also worked as Director of Academic Services at Brunel before joining Anglia Ruskin University in 2013.

He said: “I am delighted to be joining the University of Portsmouth at this exciting and challenging time in higher education. The University is making great strides in its international outlook and reputation, as well as having a thriving international community.

“I am looking forward to working with colleagues across the University and its stakeholders to enhance its global footprint and engagement to provide opportunities for our students, staff and community.”

Chris joins the University on 1 September 2016.
