The series is produced by the team behind the Grierson Award-winning Baby Surgeons in collaboration with Macmillan Cancer Support.
The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, one of the world’s leading cancer hospitals, is exclusive to Super Surgeons: A Chance at Life. Here, cutting-edge surgeons perform high-risk operations, pushing the boundaries of what is medically possible, and often on incredibly rare cancers.
The stories of the patients who put their trust – and their lives – in the hands of the surgeons are told in the series. Whereas other hospitals may have limited surgical options, the Royal Marsden is a leader in new surgical technology, giving patients with difficult-to-treat cancers hope. From the moment they receive a full diagnosis, to the difficult decisions they must make, to their recovery after surgery and adjustment to a new life, the series reveals the impact cancer has on individuals and their loved ones.
The series is also produced in collaboration with Macmillan, a cancer support organisation in the United Kingdom. The series will be able to show the bigger picture of how cancer affects different people on a daily basis, and how Macmillan goes above and beyond to support them.
The series also highlights the NHS’s incredible work in working at full capacity to recover from the pandemic. When visitor restrictions were in place to protect the most vulnerable patients, clinical staff worked tirelessly to support patients throughout their cancer treatment and doubled as companions during treatment and consultation appointments.
“Super Surgeons: A Chance at Life will give us profound insight into the lives of patients requiring life-saving surgery as well as a unique perspective on cancer from the consultants treating them,” said Wonderhood Studios Executive Producers James W Newton and Katharine Patrick. It will demonstrate both patients’ and surgeons’ courageous decision-making, as well as the courage and hope that carry patients through their treatment at such a difficult time in their lives.”
