On Monday evening, a rape occurred in the Saltersgill area.
The man is still being held for questioning.
Cleveland Police said in a statement, "The victim is being offered specialist support while investigations continue, and neighbourhood officers remain in the area conducting reassurance patrols."
They also reminded the public that because the investigation is ongoing, speculating on social media could jeopardise the case.
