A two car road traffic collision in Whippingham on the Isle of Wight has closed a main road on the Island this evening.
The crash happened on Whippingham Road in East Cowes just after 8pm .It is being attended by all three emergency services. Police have closed the road to East Cowes from Lushington Roundabout. The road is closed both directions whilst they deal with the Incident. Local traffic diversion have been put in place via Brocks Copse Road.
Police have requested the assistant from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service who have sent fire crews from Newport and East Cowes to the scene.
One of the vehicles has left the carriageway and is on its’ side in a hedge. co. The second vehicle involved is said to have sustained heavy damage.
A spokeswoman from Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue said” That one person is trapped in one of the vehicles. Two normal fire appliances from East Cowes and Newport are in attendance The Rescue tender from Newport as also been sent to assist . Fire crews are using cutting equipment to extricate the person from the vehicle.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air ambulance has also been called to the scene to assist.
Buses are also effected and are unable to currently Service East Cowes and the surrounding area. A Southern Vectis spokesman has advised that Routes 4 and 5 will not be able to serve East Cowes. The spokesman has advised customers requiring East Cowes should travel into Newport and transfer on to Route 1 to Cowes then onwards via the floating bridge to East Cowes
Passengers on Red Funnel are also being advised that the road is closed and to seek alternative routes.
A Spokesman for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police Roads Policing has advised that the road will be closed for sometime.
