2,000lb sea mine mistakenly dredged up by fishing boat off the Isle of Wight has been destroyed

EOD divers from Portsmouth have safely destroyed a 2,000lb sea mine mistakenly dredged up by the fishing boat Cara Lee off the Isle of Wight.

The seven-foot  2000 lb Second World War device, thought to be German, was caught in nets off the Needles on the Isle of Wight, at about 8am on Saturday.

Despite an attempt, yesterday to make the mine safe today efforts clearly showed how powerful and dangerous the mine was.

 

With cheers of Yes after the navy diver involved in attaching the charge had seen his work successfully completed

 

A 2-mile explosion zone was put in place whilst the controlled explosion took place.
