Officers investigating an assault on a 33 year-old woman in Gosport are releasing an image of a man they would like to speak to.

At around 7pm on Tuesday, November 29, the victim who was out running was approached by a man she did not know on the cycle path between Alecto Road and Alver Creek. The man pushed her over and then grabbed her by the wrists, she fought him off and ran away.

The woman was not seriously injured and was left with some bruising.

An investigation is underway to establish exactly what happened and an e-fit image of a man that officers would like to speak to is attached to this appeal.

This man is described as:

· White.

· Aged in his forties.

· He had a thin face, dark hair, and stubble.

· He was wearing black clothing, including a knee-length coat.

· The victim said he smelt ‘odd’.

· The man did not speak, but made a grunting noise.

Investigating officer DC Charlie Cox said: “I am not linking this investigation with any other reports in the area, but I am keen to locate the man who we have released an image of. He may be able to assist our enquiries and establish exactly what happened.

“Thankfully the victim was not seriously injured, but I’d like to remind people using the cycle paths in the area to be aware of their surroundings especially when using unlit areas at night”.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind people of the following personal safety advice:

· If you’re walking alone stick to busy, well-lit areas and try to look confident.

· Keep valuables out of sight – don’t walk and talk on your mobile phone at the same time.

· Keep bags and rucksacks closed, zipped and buckled.

· If someone tries to take something from you it may be better to let them have it rather than try to defend yourself.

· If you decide to defend yourself remember that your attacker might be stronger than you – it is often better just to shout loudly and run away.

· When out walking or jogging and if listening to music, be aware that you might not be able to hear someone approaching.

· If you’re running at night. especially in areas that are not well lit, consider wearing reflective or bright clothing to ensure that motorists and other pedestrians can easily spot you.
