The severe fire ripped through the former ex-blockbuster video shop that is now Lanka Xpress grocery shop on Shirley High Street in Southampton last night.
Hampshire fire and Rescue were called just before 8.30pm. It took crews four hours to bring the blaze under control.
The fire service sent a large amount of resources to the incident eight fire appliances and a two command and control support vehicles attended. The new Ultra-High Pressure Lances (UHPL), ventilation techniques was used to tackle the fire and an Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP) was used to tackle the blaze from above. Fire fighters wearing 16 sets of breathing apparatus used three hose reels and five jets to battle the first-floor blaze. The terraced building was the former Blockbuster Video shop with residential accommodation above. Nobody is believed to have been hurt or injured in the fire. Fire crews from Redbridge, St Mary’s, Eastleigh, Hightown, Romsey, Botley, Portchester and Eastleigh Headquarters attended. An investigation will take place to ascertain the cause of the fire. Both floors of the commercial property and the residential properties were severely damaged by fire and smoke.
