A 22 year-old man from Gosport has been sent to prison for ten months after he exposed himself to a vulnerable pensioner whom he was employed to deliver food to.

Portsmouth Crown Court heard that on May 15, 2015 Bradley Hammond of Nobes Avenue visited his victim, who was 84 years-old at the time, at her home in sheltered housing near Waterlooville.

He delivered her food before taking the victim, who suffers from dementia, into her bedroom where he exposed himself and carried out an indecent act.

Hammond was subsequently arrested and charged with sexual assault. On September 12 he pleaded guilty to engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a person with a mental disorder contrary to Section 32 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 at Portsmouth Crown Court. On Monday October 24 he was sentenced to ten months in prison. Hammond also has to sign the sex offenders register for the next seven years.

Investigating officer DC Paul Barry said: “This has been distressing for the victim and her family and I’m pleased that this sentence will provide them some closure following Hammond’s actions. The judge has clearly shown how seriously the courts take this kind of offence, which is made all the more disturbing because Hammond abused his position of trust.

“I’d like to thank the victim’s carers and her sheltered housing providers who brought this to the attention of the relevant authorities immediately, which helped our investigation.

“This type of behaviour targeting the elderly or vulnerable simply won’t be tolerated and I hope Hammond’s sentence sends a clear message to that effect”.
