Heartbreaking death of Fire Brigades Union member Helen Harrison

Helen Harrison was an inspiration to many people in the Fire Brigades Union and wider labour movement, always supportive of new officials and committed to fighting on behalf of union members and working people.

Joining Staffordshire FRS in 1982, Helen rose to the role of Group Manager before leaving the service in 2015. Helen joined the FBU National Women’s Committee (NWC) as a rep for the West Midlands Region in 1999 and soon became one of the most reliable, knowledgeable and progressive FBU officials that the NWC has seen. The trust that women members had in Helen was clearly demonstrated when she was elected as national Chair of the Section.

Helen gave women a clear, unequivocal and highly respected voice in the FBU and the wider Fire & Rescue Service, fighting to improve their working lives through groundbreaking work to deliver policies & working practices which have impacted throughout the UK Fire Service.

She  will be  remembered for  her humour, support and comradeship. She has left our union and our service a much better place and, on behalf of all our members, we thank her for that.

We send our heartfelt solidarity and deepest condolences to her husband Ian, her family, friends, comrades and sisters at this very sad time. Sororally, South West FBU.
