A major rescue operation is taking place this afternoon on the Isle of Wight after a person fell and broken their femur in a woodland just West of Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight.

Paramedics and  a land ambulance  supported by  a coastguard rescue team from Needles  have all been scrambled to the incident that happened just after 2.20pm on Thursday December 29.

The coastguard rescue helicopter based at Lee-on-Solent have been called upon in an attempt to try to winch the injured patient from the Wooded area .

The coastguard helicopter  Rescue 104 can be seen hovering over the woodland near Westhill Lane and a cloud  of orange smoke can also be seen.   The helicopter is  attempting  to try to extract the casualty whilst paramedics from Isle of Wight ambulance service  and members of the Needles coastguard rescue team guide the winchman. It is understood that the request for a helicopter was made due to the seriousness of the break and the female  patient who has other medical  complications. The Isle of Wight Air ambulance was unavailable.  The coastguard helicopter have successfully recovered the injured woman  and  she has now been flown to St Mary’s hospital in Newport for treatment to her broken thigh bone
