A woman is fighting for her life after falling from a cliff in Dorset.

The woman who is from the Swanage area was airlifted to hospital by a Coastguard rescue Helicopter from Portland yesterday afternoon with “very serious head injuries” after she fell from a cliff in Swanage.

Emergency services where called to the scene just after 2.30pm on Saturday after a member of public raised the alarm.They had witnessed the woman fall over the cliff edge.

Steve Mann,Spokesman for the UK Coastguard said: ‘HM Coastguard coordinated a very difficult rescue this afternoon at Peveril Point. We would remind people that if they see anybody in difficulty on or around the cliffs in the UK to please call ‘999’ and ask for the Coastguard.’ He went on to say that they called out two Coastguard Rescue teams from Swanage and St Albans who were tasked along with the Rescue Helicopter “Rescue 106″ from Portland to help to rescue the woman. Due to the location and the existent of the woman injuries she was flown to Southampton General Hospital after being treated by paramedics at the scene”

A spokesman from Dorset Police said” Emergency services responded to a concern for welfare today following reports a woman had gone over the cliffs at Swanage. At around 2.30pm t, Saturday 6 February 2016, Dorset Police were called to Peveril Point by a member of public who saw a woman fall from the cliff. Police officers, HM Coastguard and the ambulance service attended. A local woman aged in her 50s was airlifted from the cliffs by the coastguard helicopter and taken to a safe place where she was treated by paramedics. She sustained very serious head and chest injuries and was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the air ambulance. Her condition is said to be life-threatening. The woman’s family have been informed. Chief Inspector Bob Acaster, of Dorset Police, said: “Emergency services worked hard in very difficult weather to rescue the woman from the cliff and bring her to safety.”
