Armed police officers Hampshire Constabulary have been called to Sandown on the Isle of Wight this afternoon.

Officers from the joint armed response Roads policing unit were called to the incident High Street in Sandown just after 4pm on Monday.

Armed officers detained a number of people outside the Sandown library building.

Hampshire Constabulary deployed the specialist officers to Avenue Road, Sandown at 15:46 following a report that a member of the public had spoken to a man who claimed he had a gun.

The 46-year-old homeless man was spoken to by officers and released with no further action.
