Drivers are facing travel chaos on the roads this morning after two sinkholes were discovered on the M25 following overnight flash flooding that hit many parts of Kent.
The road was closed in both directions between junctions 4 and 5 earlier, with police warning people to avoid the area.
The motorway is now back open on that section with just one lane closed in each direction.
A new separate police incident has left the motorway blocked in both directions from junction 3 the Swanley Interchange to junction 4 for Orpington.
Congestion stretches back to junction 2 the Darenth Interchange on the clockwise carriageway.
It comes after yesterday’s heavy rainfall led to flooding amid warnings to stay home unless journeys are vital.
Kent Police said two sinkholes were discovered in the early hours of Tuesday morning following investigations into a single vehicle accident.
Highways England were sent to the scene and an emergency road closure was the brought into force on both directions. Local diversions were put in place via the M26.
In just five hours two month of rain fell causing the sinkhole to open up.
The M25 is currently closed in both directions between junctions J3 to J4 near Swanley with delays of at least 45 minutes due to an on-going Kent police led incident.
For traffic approaching you are advised to expect disruption with extra journey time and may potentially have to re-route your journey.
If travelling towards this area from much farther afield, you may wish to change your strategic route, allow extra travel time and follow guidance from our on-road variable message signs and media.
A diversion is in place for anti-clockwise traffic J4 – J3. The diversion is to follow the hollow black circle symbol, leaving at J4, taking the first exit (M25 Link), towards the A21, immediately taking the A224 north towards Goddington and meeting the A20 junction at Footscray. Turning right onto the A20 to proceed east towards Swanley to re-join the M25 at J3.
The clockwise traffic diversion is the reverse of the above route following the hollow black triangle symbol from J3, taking the A20 west towards Footscray, A224 south towards Coddington and M25 link to return to the M25 at J4.
