Police have charged a man on the Isle of Wight after he dazzled the Pilot of a Police helicopter causing him to make an emergency landing whilst carrying out a search for a high risk missing Person on the 26th March 2019.
Nicholas Hawkins of Heathfield Road Bembridge is set to appear before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday to answer the charge of directing or shining a light at an aircraft in flight so as to dazzle or distract the pilot.
According to Police at the time of the incident, it was during this search that a ‘laser’ was shone at the pilot of the aircraft. However, Police now say that ‘a light source’ was shone at the helicopter that was attached to gun.
Following a short investigation by officers, the CPS authorised the charge of Mr Hawkins with an offence – direct or shine light at aircraft in flight so as to dazzle or distract pilot – contrary to articles 225 and 265(6) of the Air Navigation Order 2016.
