UPDATED:A34 closed in both directions due to a serious collision

teenager dies at scene of a34 horror crash

The A34 has been closed in both directions due to a serious road traffic collision near East Ilsley this afternoon.

The closure is in place from the A339 Vodafone roundabout at Newbury northbound and traffic is being diverted off the A34 southbound at East Ilsley and Compton.
The Thames Valley air ambulance has landed on the carriage. The serious collision follows a crash involving a caravan that Police cleared earlier in the day. Traffic has been diverted through small roads in surrounding villages but many drivers are reporting slow progress.

Update:The southbound carriageway is likely to remain closed for several hours. If you are stuck in the queue southbound, please be patient. Police are attempting to relieve traffic from the rear of the queue.

As at 6.30pm

The A34 in Berkshire remains closed northbound between the A4 (Speen) and A1485 (Chiltern) due to a traffic collision near East Ilsley. Thames Valley Police are on scene and the road will remain in place whilst they conduct a full investigation in to the incident. The incident has occurred between the M4 J13 and the A4185, however due to a number of unconnected planned weekend closures here, the closures have had to be extended further.

The suggested diversion route for northbound traffic is to exit the A34 at Speen and take the A4 westbound. At Hungerford turn right on to the A338 northbound. Continue to M4 J14. Traffic which was bound for the M4 can join the motorway here. Road users wishing to get back to the A34 northbound should continue on the A338 north from M4 J14 to Wantage. Turn right in Wantage on to the A417 eastbound and continue on this road to the roundabout at Rowstock. Turn left on to the A4130 torwards Didcot to rejoin the A34 at Milton.
