Charles Maconochie, of no fixed abode but recently Hartlepool, abused the girl over a year-long period in 2012, when she was 11 years old and he was 75.
Durham Crown Court heard the abuse took place in his living room, bedroom and kitchen, with Maconochie touching the child’s body, putting his hand down her clothing to touch her bottom and kissing her on the lips.
Maconochie, now aged 84, groomed the child by buying her gifts and would ask what she would do in return for them.
The victim had the courage to come forward in 2016 after Maconochie was sentenced to four years in jail after he pleaded guilty to nine counts of engaging in sexual activity with a girl under 16, the court heard.
On sentencing Judge Rachim Singh said: “You richly deserve to go back to jail, there can be no doubt about that.
“You received a four year sentence previously and at that particular time the victim in this case had the courage to speak out about the abuse she suffered at 11 years of age.
“That abuse continued for a significant period of time, 12 months at least.
“At the time of your offending you groomed her by buying her gifts as presents and then asking her what you would get in return for this gift. She felt unable at the time to tell anyone about this.
“She was unable to tell her teacher, unable to tell her own mother, she ultimately told the police about this matter in 2016.”
Judge Singh said the victim has been self harming as a coping mechanism.
Maconochie was interviewed by police about the allegations while serving his previous sentence but refused to answer any questions.
The court heard there were delays to the police investigation that were “no fault” of the defendant’s and meant court proceedings were only taking place now.
He pleaded guilty to 11 counts of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13.
Maconochie was given a 16-month suspended sentence and was put on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years.
Maconochie was also previously jailed in 2015 after he pleaded guilty to nine charges of sexual offences against another girl under the age of 16. The offences covered sexual touching and inciting the girl to engage in sexual activity.
