Fire crews were called just before 8pm (Tuesday) to a fire in Hayling Avenue in Baffins, Portsmouth, this evening after a fire in a wheelie bin spread to the roof area of a bin shed.

Three fire appliances from Southsea were sent to the scene as smoke from the fire filled the street.

Police closed the road and Kimbolton Road was taped off while fire crews dealt with the blaze and prevented it from spreading to neighbouring flats. A number of firefighters with breathing apparatus and hose reels were seen tackling the fire.

Whilst smoke filled the street residents in the road were advised to keep their windows closed.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown but fire crews have advised people not to put hot ashes in bins.
