major search after light aircraft ditches in sea near rye

Th Coastguard are coordinated a search for a light aircraft which ditched into the sea half a mile from Rye Harbour in East Sussex.

Coastguard rescue helicopters from Lydd and Solent are searching the area for signs of the aircraft and RNLI lifeboats from Rye Harbour and Dungeness are carrying out a searched of the sea. Rye Bay and Dungeness Coastguard Rescue Teams are carrying out a shoreline search.

The alarm was raised at 5.05pm and reports indicated one person was on board the air craft.

The aircraft and pilot have not been found and the current search is likely to continue until dusk.

Two search and rescue helicopters are at the scene along with three lifeboats and two coastguard search and rescue teams the search is continuing.
