Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was punched while in a taxi queue in Southampton.

Officers were called to the taxi rank in London Road at 2.20am today after reports that a 23-year-old man was punched in the back of the head.

The assault caused him to fall to the ground, leaving him with a ruptured eardrum and swelling around his right eye.

He was taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who was in the taxi queue at that time of the morning or who was in the London Road area.

A 25-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of ABH and bailed until February 3.
