An inmate is being given medical treatment after a blaze in a cell at broke out at HMP Winchester this afternoon.

Three fire engines and five ambulances were seen at the prison premises on Romsey Road, Winchester.

One of the fire engines is from Winchester, with the other two engines coming from Eastleigh.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said: “We had a call from the fire service at 3.02pm about a fire in a prison cell on B wing.”

Tweets have been made on social media claiming that a riots going off in HMP Winchester, ambulances, police and fire engines on site, loads of cell fires.

“We sent our hazardous area response team (HART) and four vehicles along with an ambulance officer and a rapid response vehicle.

“The prisoner was taken out of the cell and is being cared for by the prison’s health care team.”

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said: “We are currently in attendance at the prison but beyond that we do not give out details why we are at the prison.”

The spokesman added they were called to the prison at 3pm and left just after 4.15pm the same afternoon.
