Police have closed off part of Winchester city centre this lunchtime. Police have closed upper high street St Paul’s Hill and Winchester Railway station following what is being described as a Police incident. We understand that Police are trying to strike up dialogue with a distressed woman on a bridge. There are a number of Police vehicles parked on St Paul’s Hill and the South central ambulance service SCAS hazardous area response team are at the incident. It is understood that the woman has now been on the top of the railway bridge for approx two hours.
A spokeswoman for British Transport Police said its officers were sent to the scene after a call was made at 11.34am.
Police have closed off Clifton terrace and the lady sitting on the parapet and couple of officers talking to her. Winchester railway train station has also been closed off.”
Police have also taped off both sides of the the bridge leading to the railway station at around 2.30pm officers are also directing members of the public away from the scene
A British Transport Police spokesman said there was a concern for the welfare of a woman, whose age is not known, and that they were attempting to get her to a place of safety.
A South West Trains spokesman said: “We are currently experiencing minor delays to services through this area.”
