Two Further Arrested after Sandel Serbu was Clubbed to death with Pickaxe Handles in Ilford

Police investigating the murder of Sandel Serbu in Ilford have made two further arrests, as they continue to appeal for information and witnesses.

Sandel, 36, died in hospital after suffering serious injuries following reports of a fight in High Road at the junction with Connaught Road, Ilford, at 02:48hrs on Sunday, 12 November.

He was a Romanian national who had recently moved to the UK and lived in Barking. A post-mortem examination held at East Ham Mortuary on Thursday, 16 November, gave cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head.

On Monday, 20 November, two men aged 43 and 27 were arrested on suspicion of murder.

The 43 year old man has since been released under investigation. The third man remains in custody at an east London police station.

DCI Paul Considine of the Homicide and Major Crime Command, who is leading the investigation, said: “We know that those responsible for this deadly assault arrived at the location in two cars. The victim was attacked as he got out of a vehicle in which he was passenger.

“There were a number of people, both in cars and pedestrians, who would have witnessed this attack. I need these people to come forward and tell me what they saw.

“I would also like to appeal to anyone who may have captured footage of the scene or the aftermath to contact police. Your footage may hold vital evidence and you may well have captured the suspects at the scene or running away.”

A 27-year-old man [A] arrested on Thursday, 17 November in connection with the investigation has since been released with no further action to be taken.
