LPG lorry leaking gas closes main Isle of Wight Road between Newport and Sandown

Emergency services have been called to an LPG carrying lorry that has a large leak. Three fire crews have been mobilised to the incident from Shanklin who are being supported by Newport. The main link road between Newport and Sandown has been closed at the request of fire commanders.

Officers from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police have put in hard Road closures At Blackwater and traffic has been and is being directed away from the incident area. The driver alerted the fire service just after 8am to the leak.

It is understood that leak was detected in delivery pipe work on the lorry when checks were carried out at Wight Farm energy. Tac advised Graham Orchard from Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue said :”We have put in the road closure to assist in creating a safe area to work. The immediate area has been evacuated and the road remains closed in both directions as fire crews continue to deal with the incident. The lorry is situated close to the main biomass entrance. The main tank has been isolated. We believed that the leak in delivery pipe work. We are going to allow that to escape.
