A man has been been arrested by armed Police following a robbery in Newport on the Isle of Wight this afternoon (Friday Feb 9).

A shop remains under-guard by officers with scene of crime officers also working at the robbery scene It is understood that staff at the Central Staff where held up with a knife just yards away from the Island Innovation Sixth Form Campus at Nodehill. Staff at the store are said to shaken but unhurt. Police were called just after 4pm to the centre of Newport.

A man was detained and searched by armed officers near to a block of flats on Upper James Street. Officers have also been carrying out a search of wheelie bins in West Street. A man was taken away following being detained and search by officers in an undercover BMW X5.

Multiple Police units have been seen in the own with officers on foot jumping over garden walls and searching wheelie bins. The search is now centering around a property on Carisbrooke Road.

A police spokesman said: “We were called at 3.31pm to reports of a robbery incident at Central Convenience Store on St James’ Street, Newport.
“It was reported that a man entered the Central store holding a knife.
“Officers are on-scene making enquiries.
“A man has been arrested in connection with this incident.”
