Woman left fighting for her is Airlift following Serious Collision in Freshwater

The woman driver of a Toyota Yaris has been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital following a serious collision on the Brook Road Junction in the village of Chessell on the Isle of Wight with serious life changing head injuries this evening whilst three other are being treated at St Mary’s Hospitial in Newport.

Emergency crews were called to the scene just after 5pm on Monday evening. Fire crews from Freshwater,Ryde and Newport along with the Rescue Tender station at Newport also attended. A full collision scene investigation is now taking place after fire fighters used specialist cutting equipment to remove the roof of the woman’s vehicle. Three other were also taken to hospital by land ambulance. A nearby home owner describe hearing something like a bomb going off following the hcollision. The two vehicles collied on the B3401 and the B3399. The woman was trapped for approx 30 minutes whilst crews freed the woman using the jaws of life and spreaders.

Officers from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Armed roads Policing unit have launched a probe into how the collision happened. This has meant that road closures being put in place. With traffic being advise to avoid the Middle Road and seek alternative routes. These closures will remain for many hours whilst specialist examiners carry out a scene and vehicle examination.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Ambulance service said three casualties were taken to St Mary’s Hospital following the collision, and one person has been airlifted to the mainland for emergency treatment.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said one female casualty was trapped in one of the vehicles and freed by firefighters.
