Road and Bus chaos after manhole cover collapses in Shanklin Village

Church Road in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight is likely to remain closed overnight following a manhole cover sinking. The closure may run into Friday morning we can reveal. Island Road put in the emergency closure and a road repair crews are on the scene working to repair the collapsed Manhole outside The Crab Inn pub.

The closure has led to all buses being unable to serve parts of Shanklin and Ventnor this evening. Private vehicles are also unable to access the road. Island Road Emergency crews were called shortly after 10pm to the class one emergency on Thursday 14th June,after reports that the manhole surround was sinking and part of the road had broken up and the surround had collapsed.

Road repair crews are on the scene carry out remedial works but have advised the materials they are using will take time to set. Driver are being advised to follow a diversion route along Victoria Avenue and down to Whiteley bank to access Ventnor.
Southern Vectis say that the route three has been effected as a result of the closure as they can not get between Shanklin and Ventnor. The route 3 services are now running a revised timetable via Victoria Avenue and Whiteley Bank in both directions.

UPDATE: Works and repairs have been successfully completed and the closure has now been removed.
