thunder and lighting expected to hit the southcoast

Thunder and lighting is expected to pass across the South from around 10pm on Saturday evening. As the storms will be developing high up in the atmosphere, any rain produced is likely to evaporate before ground level. These kinds of storms can produce cloud-to-ground lightning strikes that have the potential to start a fire.

Stormy conditions can be hazardous at the best of times, but with the extremely dry conditions currently being experienced across the country comes an increased risk of any ground strikes setting fire to fields and trees across the Island.

It is possible that the Isle of Wight will escape the thunderstorms all together, but local forecasters say the risk is very real.

Anyone who spots a fire developing should dial 999 and ask for the fire service immediately. In general, People should be vary about discarding lighted materials or starting bonfires as these can quickly spread.
